Thanks for the pets rcsrn51, all systems are now GO whereas before I could not get the darn thing to work.

I "solved" a similar problem when my grey matter engaged gear and I realised that when Alsamixer opens from the menu in mimimised format the speaker slider is to the extreme right and is not immediately visible.
