I took your recommendation. Left it running overnight, still going fine. Smooth, quick. I'll enjoy reacquainting myself with puppy. Only issue so far is that Colin the dog jumps out of his skin when I boot.

Looking good so far. Had to adjust channels on my router to get wireless up but otherwise looking excellent.
Thanks

Hope it's OK to resurrect an elderly thread, but I have exactly the same question, and hope that some of the more recent distro's may work well. The laptop in question is an 3003wlmi/3002lc hybrid running a 1800mhz processor, 512 ram (though 128 of that is currently shared with the graphics), 40gig ...

Audio CD update. After trying every .pet audio player I can find I finally found that Xfree works perfectly, once you find the CD volume function in sgmixer (right click the speaker icon in the tray) which is defaulted to off. None of the other audio players I found could play CD's, gxine found them...

Hi again, thanks for your continued interest. The bios is definitely Toshiba (finally found a Toshiba page that confirmed that). Unfortunately there is no manual fan control in the bios settings. There is mention in the bios version notes of a couple of the newer ones to mine of solving problems wit...

As far as I can make out (based on googling) the only successful method to make the fan work on a Tecra 8100 is to use the toshiba_acpi module. On mine though, that refuses to load. Others (not puppy though) claim to have successfully loaded it on their 8100's. The Toshiba BIOS update notes lists ve...

OK, with no further suggestions in, I decided last night that flashing the bios without resorting to Win98 was too risky, and hard wired the fan off the ps2 port instead. Result is a great running (though a little noisy - not too bad though) laptop suitable for mains operation (battery buggered anyw...

Just in case this helps anyone else. I was unable to load toshiba_acpi successfully. I am fairly sure that this is a bios version issue, but with no Windows on the machine, and not confident in using any of the many Linux only workarounds for flashing a bios, I decided that discretion is the best pa...

Just in case anybody else ever looks at this for assistance, a quick round up. Video problem reappeared after returning BIOS settings to default. It turned out that this included the most conservative cpu frequency scaling for battery use, but that with the so far unsoluble acpi problem (bodged by r...

Thanks again for helping with this, but I'm no farther forward. Booting with acpi off doesn't seem to make any difference - fan still doesn't start, toshiba_acpi doesn't load etc. This may mean that the hardware is faulty, but since I can't test that............. I had a look through the links you g...

Hi folks, decided to go for the next version of FrankenTosh and bought a couple more ill 8100's off ebay. Now have one working machine made from parts of 4. This has fixed the video problem with DVD's, but curiously not the CD audio one. Strangely, the dodgy hacksawed CD drive that came with the &qu...

BTW, pretty sure it's a Toshiba bios. Every Phoenix bios I've loked at in google images has a blue background and Phoenix at the top. They all have a similar style too. Mine has no name, only a version number, has a black background and is a very different style. In Windows (Ie Toshiba utilities loa...

G'day Muggins, Thanks for your help. I'm running a stand alone full install of 4.1.2 and have also tried a live CD of 4.2 - no difference - still can't load Toshiba_acpi module. Its a Tecra 8100 (made 1999 - 2001ish I think). Googling suggests that someone running Knoppix has got toshiba_acpi runnin...

Thanks for the help. I added the module as suggested, but the results appear to suggest that my bios doesn't support it - error message as per your second post. I believe that the bios is Toshiba, and on checking the Toshiba web page, there are several newer versions of the bios, the newest being 20...

I've installed acpitool on my Toshiba Tecra 8100 in an attempt to troubleshoot a non running fan. None of the fan or temperature commands seem to work, and when I try the -T command I get: Sorry, but no Toshiba ACPI extensions were found on this system. Edit after remembering how to copy/paste # acp...

Toshiba Tecra 8100 running full install 4.1.2 Fan issue

Hi Just built one laptop out of 2. Most things going fine, but the fan won't run. Tried 2 fans so fairly sure it isn't the problem. Can I manually test/always on the fan to check it? Thanks. Did some further searching Have tried booting with acpi off booting with puppy acpi=force Neither helped. Ins...

Thanks for the idea, unfortunately it didn't work. Extensive googling has only found folk posting requests for the same code with no answers, and folk cursing Toshiba for refusing to release the beep codes. I've tried all the usual hardware removals/reseats to no avail. I'm not sure whether I'll giv...

Whilst an answer would be good for my peace of mind, it probably won't help now as my trusty old Tosh died this morning - won't boot at all - black screen and no HDD action. On the offchance, anybody know Toshiba Tecra 8100 beep codes? I'm getting one long followed by 29 short most times I turn it o...

Little more info. I found another version of Mplayer linked from another thread, and tried that. It works, but somewhat bizarrly seems to play at about half speed with fractured audio. Clicking on fast forward plays it close to normally with good audio for a little before (I assume) the FF times out...

Slow clunky video on Toshiba Tecra 8100

Hi First up thanks so much for this excellent OS. After playing around with a number of Linx distros (first timer) this is the only one that comes close to having everything working perfectly for my aging Toshiba Tecra 8100 P3700mhz 256mB ram S3 Savage 8mB video card. I have done a full install of 4...
