It works.
I got rid of my old grub with fdisk /mbr and installed a new grub on a new dedicated partition. I now have 2 functioning puppies. As you point out, hiding hda1 also hid my grub files on the subsequent boots.
Thanks for your help.

Booting 2.14 frugal Install changes partition type to 93
I have been running Puppy 2.01 as a full HD install on a PII 350 Mhz machine. It is loaded on to hda1 along with grub for the boot. I recently installed 2.14 as frugal onto hdb1. It boots successfully to 2.14 but in the process it changes the partition type of hda1 to Ameoba (93) and so subsequent b...

Dougal, My existing setup is a full HD installation as the machine is dedicated to Puppy. So my preferrence is just to upgrade that. If the full install makes upgrading more problematic perhaps I should experiment with a frugal installation on another partition with a view to migrating that way. Eit...

Thanks Barry, that seems to explains the problem. Since my ultimate intention is to update my HD installation, could I just open the iso and copy the relevant files (vmlinuz, initrd.gz and pup_xxx.sfs) to the HD and reboot. Would this retain my old xorg settings and drivers or would they be overwrit...

Thanks Gn2. Before I tried your suggestion last night I thought I'd try a shortcut. I copied the xorg.config file from my hard disk installation to /etc/x11 then restarted X. The same low resolution xvesa desktop came up. So next I went through xorgconfig as you suggested. The video card is an Accel...

Upgrading to Puppy 2.12, where's Xorg?
I have had Puppy 2.01 running successfully on a PII, 350 MHz machine. It is a full HD installation and Puppy is the only OS on the machine. I am able to use either Xvesa or Xorg at 1024x768x24 resolution on a 17" CRT. I am now trying to update to 2.12 but have been unable to boot completely fro...

I managed to get the USB off irq 10 and now it will allocate irq to the network card. I cannot however get it to allocate the io ports from 0300 onward. Again I tried a custom install as per my previous post but using 0x300 but each time when I check /proc/ioports the network card has been allocated...

After much investigation I have discovered that my problem is hardware based not software. The computer in question has an Abit BX6 motherboard which I understand has some compatability issues with ethernet cards. The problem is common to both Puppy and Win98. My current investigations revolve aroun...

Rarsa, I had another attempt at your suggestion and got a different result. I suspect I hadn't loaded the driver on my first attempt. Anyway here is a screenshot of the result. After executing the modprobe command I tried continuing with the configuration but it failed to detect the network. I will ...

How to configure SMC Ultra network card?
I have just inherited another computer (PII, 266Mhz,256M - greased lightning compared to my other Puppy machine) and have loaded Puppy 2.01 onto it. I installed a SMC Ultra network card onto the machine. When I go thorough the ethernet/network setup I load the appropriate driver and am told that is ...

Once again you are correct. I have modified the etc/modprobe.conf and now the sound card works on boot up (well as good as it's going to work on that machine). I checked the bios and could not find any reference to dma and irq settings. I should point out it's a very old version, Award Modular BIOS ...
