This is normal. The red dot over the drive's icon signifies that the drive is locked and cannot be unmounted, as it is in use by Puppy

I'll try it out again. It worked for me the last time I used under 4.3.

EDIT:

Alright, I booted into a clean installation of 4.3.1, installed the dotpup handler via the package manager, installed the package from the link, restarted X (menu->Shutdown->Restart X server), and the font worked.

Here's a Japanese character pack. To install it, you'll have to install the dotpup handler from the package manager.

@ rcrsn51

Thanks, I'll have to look over this and inform myself. However, it says that it was last updated 9 Sept 2006; I assume the information is still relevant and that things haven't changed significantly since then. Would I be correct in this assumption?

im confused as well, are you saying the frugal boots slower but runs faster?
Yes; the boot is slower as the .sfs file is copied to RAM, but running speeds are better as the programs are already loaded to RAM and ready to be used.

If you've done a frugal installation and have added a lot of programs via traditional .pets that install within the savefile and not outside of it, as some of the newer ones do, then yes; your boot time may slow, as all of the programs will be copied to RAM at boot. That's a popular misconception. ...

You could do a full installation, but, personally, I wouldn't recommend it. Yes, flash media has a better lifespan than it used to, but I see no need to stress things unnecessarily.

In summary, you shouldn't see any significant decrease in performance if you just add a few programs.

Full and frugal are two different installation and operational modes of Puppy. Essentially, a full installation behaves like a regular OS installation; a frugal installation, on the other hand, is different in that it exists in one file and is copied in its entirety to RAM at boot time. A Google sea...

i just want to add extra programs to improve the internet...and skype, i also want to make puppy look prettier Again, it depends on the programs and your setup: how big are they, do they install inside the savefile or not (if one exists), and what is you installation method (full or frugal). As for...

Whenever I install to a flash drive, I choose the MBR option from within the universal installer and haven't encountered problems doing so. Also, you might want to check the settings in your BIOS relevant to booting from USB flash media. On a machine I once used, these settings were causing a simila...

It should work on either machine. You may have to change the resolution, I believe it should ask, as there's a good bit of difference between the resolution of a netbook and a regular monitor.

I've used a number of capacities of the SanDisk Cruzer line (6 of the original line, a few from their new line) and haven't encountered any problems with installing Puppy on them or booting Puppy from them.

@ PaulBx1 That's one thing I've always thought to be funny about Windows. Why do they feel the need to hide everything 20 layers deep in an unreadable directory hierarchy and take away as much of the end-user's ability to configure things as they can? I suppose Microsoft knows what the end-user want...
