One approach might be to get 2 USB to serial cables, or 2 USB to TTL cables, and connect them to each other. The USB to serial cables would need a null-modem, and the USB to TTL cables would need the transmit pin on one connected to the receive pin on the other (and vice versa), Then each would be a...

I have a NEC i-select M5210 laptop (to be honest it's a pretty rubbish laptop but it's what I've got, so make the best of it) and I have now installed the acpitool pet, and it works well with Puppy 5.1.1. I have a power meter to test various domestic devices, and with the laptop plugged in but off, ...

I had previously put a guide for this on: http://puppylinux.org/wikka/HowToShareEmailAndBrowserSettingsInWindowsAndPuppy/backlinks but the page no longer exists. Maybe the page is somewhere else these days. I'll try to look. Edit: Now in http://pupweb.org/wikka/HowToShareEmailAndBrowserSettingsInWin...

How to talk to serial device via command line?
I am trying to communicate with an electronics device with a serial connection, and I have two different USB to serial adaptors. If I plug either in to my Puppy 511 machine, it shows up as ttyUSB0, so that seems promising. I thought I would just use the command line, and I think I know how to set th...

My preferred method is:
http://www.icpug.org.uk/national/linnwi ... 4steps.htm
You can install alongside Windows, and when you boot you simply select which to use.

Thanks for all the responses. I've also found out a few other things. It seems (although I'm not certain) that the CD remains mounted until there is a save file. Thus I couldn't create a save file with no hard drive, and I couldn't save to the CD without unmounting it, so a bit of a catch 22. I coul...

Cannot unmount CD to try to save session or remaster
My old Acer laptop has suffered a hard drive failure, so I thought I'd leave the hard drive out and try multi-session. I burnt a Puppy 4.3 CD on my newer laptop, which will boot in either laptop, but in the Acer when I shutdown, Puppy offers the option to save to CD (I have to use a CD, the Acer's d...

I have the pup-430-small.iso (downloaded 18 Sept, 17:42 UK time) which Isobuster shows contains PUP_430.SFS (dated 16 Sept 09, 18:51:58) must have been the leprechauns. In Windows (oh the shame, I guess Puppy will look inside an ISO without burning to a CD, but I don't know how) pup-430-small.iso c...

I changed the file name from pup_430.sfs to pup-430.sfs, and it worked, so it seems to be a typo bug in the frugal install. which 430 are you talking about? in the iso itself, is it pup_430.sfs or pup-430.sfs? in 430 small.iso it is correct at pup-430.sfs,. I have the pup-430-small.iso (downloaded ...

I did my usual frugal install (Isobuster to extract the relevant files from the iso, no need to boot from a CD) but it wouldn't boot, saying pup-430.sfs not found. I thought perhaps it was the upper case/lower case issue, but no. I changed the file name from pup_430.sfs to pup-430.sfs, and it worked...

I've used the ICPUG's Lin n Win method with good success. I have a recovery partition before the C drive, so my menu.lst says (hd0,1) You can find the partition in Windows (although I can't recall how off hand) or you could use the Puppy CD, and use the Mount icon on the desktop. I get: sda1 vfat 4....

I successfully used XEV to find out what codes the Windows and other hot-keys on my laptop do, see:
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=21288
and then I set them to do what I wanted (using Puppy 4.1).

Beem Try minimising a window and then using alt-tab, when I do this I cannot move the focus to the minimised window. Same for me with Puppy 4.1. It would be more user-friendly, in my opinion, if Alt-tab would go through all application, not just un-minimised ones. I haven't yet investigated any way...

I'd like my Windows key to bring up the menu, so did the XEV thing with F1 and the Windows key. In case it's relevant, it records the data twice for one key press. F1 gives about 5 lines, including: keycode 67 (keysym 0xffbe, F1) whereas the left Windows key (the only one on this laptop) gives: keyc...

My laptop boots back to Windows when I switch on after hibernating, rather than offering me the usual Windows or Puppy menu (frugal, using the http://www.icpug.org.uk/national/linnwin/step01-4steps.htm method, so I think it uses the Windows bootloader), but this menu must be on the hard drive and Wi...
