Belated thanks

Just wanted to feed text into telnet to reset my ASDL router. Now that I have "expect" and the info from this page http://linuxgazette.net/50/tag/34.html I can do it.
This is so simple!
Many thanks.
(I'm using Puppy 5.1.0 and the expect and tcl packages seem to work OK with it.)

I borrowed a Viewsonic VX2433WM (which has very close specs to the VX2439WM) and that works out of the box with Puppy 5.1. Based on that test I bought a VX2439WM and it works with Puppy 5.1 as well. Great!

Intel DH55TC motherboard, Puppy 5.1, and 1920x1080? [SOLVED]

I'm running Puppy 5.1 on my Intel DH55TC PC very happily. It's currently displaying to a 1600x1200 screen (using DVI-I) but the screen is required elsewhere. A good option is a Viewsonic VX2439WM 24" 1920x1080 LCD (VGA/HDMI/DVD-D). Before buying the screen (with no ability to return if Linux ca...

The "icons at the bottom of the screen" presumably refers to the file system icons displayed for each file system detected by Puppy Linux, including the hot-pluggable USB file systems. These are detected by /sbin/hotplug. Have a read through /sbin/pup_event_frontend_d to see what could be ...

From what I understand (and have experienced with some frustration myself), Windows by default will only recognise one partition on a removable USB mass-storage device, so your attempt to divide your USB memory stick into an ext2 partition and a fat32 partition may be doomed to failure. However, if ...

@mulrah - thanks for that. I installed abiword-2.8.2-i486.pet (see link in post above) on Puppy Linux 4.1.2 and tested printing landscape successfully. I haven't tried the supplementary Abiword packages yet. @charlie6, to install Abiword I simply clicked on the package. Once installed I started Abiw...

It's odd that the password is reset. I'm testing with the 4.1.2 CD and a frugal install. Changing the password updates /etc/shadow and is persistent across reboots. What type of Puppy installation are you using? Are other changes to files in /etc lost on reboot? (eg add a user to /etc/passwd and see...

I installed celestia.pup, xorg_OPENGL-7.2.pet, gtkglext-1.2.0-i486.pet, and copied libGLU.so.1.3.070001 to /usr/lib and made symbolic links to that from libGLU.so and libGLU.so.1. Celestia then ran fine, or rather crawled fine on my 700MHz CPU with 196MB RAM. I don't know if my graphics card is &quo...

Thanks for the question, pudgypup. I gave up trying to get Living Water to work due to the difficulty I experienced in saving the session. My memory's poor, but I now have Bible Desktop installed and working fine on my normal Puppy Linux 4.1.2 frugal installation. I think that I simply copied the fi...

If you get "no such file or directory" it's because the file name (including the path) does not exist. The command I gave was ln -s /usr/lib/libgtk-x11-2.0.so.0 /usr/lib/libgtk-x11-2.0.so while the error message that you've reported is ln: creating symbolic link 'usr/lib/libgtk-x-11.2.0.so...

For something like US$100 you can buy SpinRite (http://www.grc.com) which may resolve the hard disk problem and recover the data on the drive. Then again it may not, but it may be worth the gamble. (I bought it a couple of years but haven't had a disk die due to i/o errors yet.)

Where did you get "floola" from? My guess is that you copied the executable (ie the floola program file) from another Linux distribution and hoped that it would run in Puppy Linux. Sometimes that works but often it does not, especially for programs that depend on libraries or services. In ...

I'm a bit behind the times only downloading Living Water 2.17 now, but there we are. It looks really useful, especially after installing a Bible and the Hebrew & Greek lexicons. It works fine when booted off the CD, but saving the session to disk seems to fail. I tried copying the CD files to ha...

Gets worse in Puppy 4.2

The problem exists in Puppy 4.2 as well, but the ability to restart JWM seems to have been removed from the menus, so there is no work-around. This means that I'm effectively unable to work with Gnumeric spreadsheets under Puppy 4 because I can't be sure that I won't lose visibility on a spreadsheet...

Thanks, Patriot, that's useful diagnostic information. Unfortunately the Gnumeric team can't easily work out what the problem is. JWM fails to show spreadsheet on taskbar

With Puppy 2.17 I could open a password-protected Excel-format spreadsheet using Gnumeric. The sheet would open in a new window and a corresponding task would appear on the task bar. From Puppy 4 this does not work correctly. The window opens as before, but no indication of that task appears on the ...

[Solved] Puppy 4.1.2 Abiword landscape prints as portrait

I recently upgraded my main system from 2.17 to 4.1.2. After a while I found that my landscape Abiword documents print across the width of a page in portrait orientation (as if the command to tell the printer to turn the page through 90 degrees was omitted). Booting back to 2.17 these documents prin...

The purpose of xload is to indicate how heavily utilised the CPU has been over the past minute or so. This helps the user to determine if the CPU is busy and also if it is overworked. If your xload indicator is not very active either your machine is idle or your CPU is fast enough to cope with the w...
