Mick,I have tried and tried to create a full install on a USB stick but at some point in the proceedings the terminal crashes. I am thinking that a frugal install running PUPMODE=12 is a better way. Very similar results after all. That is what I am using here.

Funny, throughout, browser choice has always been controversial. Most distros try to offer a 'complete' solution, so SOMETHING has to go in I guess. Old old argument.

This is odd. Have tried and tried to recreate a full install to USB using F2FS installer and failed every time. Terminal crashes immediately after gparted has finished.

Re: I think I found the answer

Clicking on the setup button in Slacko 5.5, I think I found it. I haven't been able to make it work, but I found the information that created the "browser" in the tray. Thanks. zippytex, sometimes its useful to know what is happening 'under the hood'. The configuration for that lower bar ...

Tried the new full USB install with total success. Boot time is 27 seconds from pressing the button to a full working desktop including WiFi hookup. Sandisk USB stick. Interesting thing: Gparted would not resize an existing FAT32 partition to 32MB, even though it was totally empty. Nagged about not ...

It is named 5.6.71. The kernel was released this morning (my time). I haven't tested it much but it looks like the kernel source is ok.

See main post.

You are dead right about media speeds. I get most consistent results with Sandisk media. Not quite sure where this USB thing is going though. Considering everything, space used, speed, and simplicity, surely ext2 or 3 frugal installs running in pupmode12 makes more sense? It is my understanding that...

No /usr/sbin/fontwizard?

Try this .pet. It will adjust the hinting value and make your fonts much more smooth. Only for LCD screens though. Adds Fontwizard to Desktop menu. After installing, restart X

@ DaveS I'm sorry if that remark caused some offense to you. I think the original thought came from Linus Torvalds, himself - I probably heard it on a video interview on youtube. I wouldn't be here if I wasn't a fan of puppy linux and I have received a lot of help from knowledgeable people here. If...

Re: slacko-5.6 alpha

Hi Mick, You've got another winner, almost everything works perfectly. I've even installed green_dome's wine-1.6-rc4-i486_v1.pet and my favorite Windows Programs which work fine along with a commercial program. QuickVerse 2011. :D As reported earlier, there is a printer problem. HP Photosmart C5280...

Frugal install to USB. EVERYTHING working. Acer Aspire i5 with 6gb ram. Click pad not recognised as such of course. Setting up CLICKPAD was difficult in 5.5 and took much experimenting. Finally found the configuration below to work, also in this alpha. The right button area had to be configured very...
