I tried again, last night, with Wary and the laptop. It booted, found and mounted both hard drive partitions just fine. I'm not sure what's wrong with the laptop, and we'll probably end up reinstalling XP, but at least I have something that can look at what's on the drive and let us find out what dr...

Wary not only didn't mount the hard drive on the test box, it couldn't find it or, at least, the mounter didn't. Alas, I didn't think of fdisk until today and didn't have time to try Gparted. And, as the test box runs XP Home just fine, TYVM, I'm not interested in trying any potentially damaging tes...

I'm downloading Pup Rescue 2.3 right now. I picked that instead of 2.5 because it appears to have more stuff to work with. I won't be able to test it, either at my club or on my friend's computer until Thursday at the earliest. Will report back when I know how it worked. Thanx! Sylvander, I'd seen t...

Can Wary live CD see NTFS hard disk drives?
I haven't needed to use Puppy for the last few years, but do now. A friend of mine was given a used laptop with a broken XP installation and only 256MB RAM. As Puppy's very lean, I downloaded the Wary ISO and burned it. Last night, I took it to a private club I belong to and tested the CD on one of ...

Strange PCMCIA problem in 4.0
I have an old laptop with only 96Meg of RAM. Last year, I installed Puppy 4.0. (Full install, not frugal.) At first, I couldn't get it to recognize my PCMCIA USB hub (I need it because the one USB socket on the box is dead.) but after a little experimenting I learned that adding the yenta_socket mod...

Adding SFS at startup?
I just downloaded your utility and used it to install OpenOffice 3. Alas, it doesn't show up in my menu, even after restarting JWM. What else do I have to do?

Puppy 4.1.2 (2.6.25.16 kernel) final - bug reports
OK, I've downloaded 4.1.2, burned it to a CD and tried it on my laptop. No better. It loads the module for my NIC, just like 4.2.1 did, but can't find it. I tried rebooting with the card in place, but no better. Then, I pulled the card and plugged in the USB card I need because the built in port's d...

Puppy 4.1.2 (2.6.25.16 kernel) final - bug reports
Sorry, I misread the topic. When I get home, I'll download and try 4.1.2 and report back, one way or the other. Thanx!

Puppy 4.1.2 (2.6.25.16 kernel) final - bug reports
P II 233 with 96Meg RAM and a 3 Gig hard disk. Full install. My NIC, which is recognized by 4.0, is a Netgear PCMCIA NIC, and uses the pcnet_cs module. That works, just fine, with Puppy 4.0; even if I tell the wizard to use it in 4.2.1, it can't find the NIC, even though the module loads correctly. ...

Puppy 4.1.2 (2.6.25.16 kernel) final - bug reports
It's not that I needed something specific from 4.2.1, I thought that it would be better in general. After all, newer versions are supposed to be better. And, your advice about the "wifi" card shows you didn't read too well. First, it's not wifi, it's a NIC for Ethernet. Second, it was load...

Puppy 4.1.2 (2.6.25.16 kernel) final - bug reports
More information. I've managed to get the partition mounter working by deleting a config file. However, I'm now house sitting, and the laptop's all I've got. Puppy 4.2.1 doesn't recognize my PCMCIA NIC, and can't access it, but I happen to have a Puppy 4.0 CD handy. It finds it, loads the pcnet_cs m...

Puppy 4.1.2 (2.6.25.16 kernel) final - bug reports
I had an old laptop that was running fine on Puppy 4.0. Then, I "upgraged" to 4.2.1 and was appalled! First, if you try to mount the CD and use it to upgrade, the installer can't find the needed files. You can only do the upgrade by booting from the CD. Very bad! Second, not only do you ha...

Puppy 4.2.1 Final
I'm running Puppy 4.0 on my laptop. It has a P II 255, 96Meg of RAM and a 3 Gig hard disk. It's a full install, not a frugal. Which version of Puppy should I upgrade to, and what's the best way? (I know Puppy checks for upgrade on boot, so I'm presuming there's a way to do it without a complete rein...

Thank you. I've now added soffice, the main program for OpenOffice to the list. There's one odd thing, however: if I rename the link to OpenOffice, it stops working, almost as if renaming it breaks it. Weird! I guess I could always manually create a link with that name in the right directory if it w...

Adding programs to "Open With."
I remember, once, finding something that would let me add programs to Puppy's "Open With" menu, but I can't remember what it is. I'd much rather use that to edit an OpenOffice file, rather than open the program, then navigate to the file. (If nothing else, it's what we're all accustomed to...

The obvious solution is to create a shell variable (Let's say $TESTING.) and set it to one. Then, when it's time to run your poll, you say: if $TESTING ... When you start the slide show, set $TESTING to 0 and the if statement becomes false, and the script doesn't poll. As you don't export the variab...
