I had two problems booting Puppy within VMware. One was that Puppy didn't seem to recognize VMware's SCSI disk. I had to use IDE.

The other was that I had to pass "acpi=off" to the kernal from the grub menu.

You can use petbegone to remove unwanted packages (like Abiword and Seamonkey).
